Police Detective Hospitalized After Rescuing Dog From Mercer County House Fire

A police detective was hospitalized after rescuing a dog from a house fire in Mercer County, authorities said.

Officers responding to 109 Browning Ave. in Ewing saw smoke billowing from the home around 9 a.m. on Thursday, June 2, the Ewing Police Department said.

While the residents had safely escaped the home prior to officers’ arrival, the homeowner told police that a dog was still trapped inside.

Det. Julia Caldwell immediately entered the home alongside patrol units and successfully rescued the dog before being treated for smoke inhalation and rushed to a local hospital for further medical attention, police said.

The blaze was doused with help from several surrounding fire departments.

No other injuries were reported.

The fire was deemed non-suspicious following the initial investigation, which was handled by Ewing Township Fire Marshal Mike Nelson.

The displaced residents are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Other assisting agencies include Ewing EMS, Capital Health Paramedics, the Ewing Fire Department, the Trenton Fire Department, and the Hamilton Fire Department.
